Summary:The objective of this study is to rigorously evaluate SME programs in four Latin American countries -- Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru -- to gain insights into whether SME programs work, which programs perform better than others, and why. To this end, the research team worked closely with national statistics offices in each of the four countries to develop firm-level panel data on program beneficiaries and a comparison group of nonprogram participants with similar firm attributes. Evaluation techniques revealed generally positive and significant impacts for several (but not all) SME programs in the countries reviewed. Tables, Figures, Appendixes, References.
