Summary: | Installation of an adaptive process controller for NO sub(x) reduction and enhancement of the heat rate on Unit 1 of Allegheny Energy Supply's Albright generating station is described. The system was designed to minimize NO sub(x) emissions subject to all stack emission requirements, including opacity and carbon monoxide limits, while providing an optimal heating rate. Findings from analysis of the implemented system indicated that the adaptive process controller reduced emissions of NO sub(x) by some 15%. In addition, the system provided a 2% improvement in CEM heat rate while maintaining CO emissions to below 250 ppm. Factors that led to implementation of the adaptive process controller at the facility in question are discussed. The three-stage methodology used for NO sub(x) emission optimization at the site is examined. |
