Summary:The influence of the characteristics of the sewage sludge selected as precursor on the final quality of the resultant adsorbents, was investigated. To establish the textural properties and chemical composition, including the speciation of the adsorbents/catalysts inorganic fraction, all the solids were characterized. The H sub(2)S removal ability in all cases was increased by thermal treatment of the raw sludges. For these thermally treated materials, catalytic conversion to elemental sulfur and sulfate moieties was found to be the main route of H sub(2)S removal. The adsorbents based on an iron/calcium-containing sludge were the most reactive and exhibited the highest capacities for H sub(2)S retention. For this particular type of sludge, a reasonably good performance was observed even when the dried sludge was used as adsorbent/catalyst.
