Summary:The purpose of this study was to explore those situations where injection drug users (IDU) are at risk for borrowing & lending drug injection equipment, & to assess social representations of sharing in life situations among such drug users. Data were collected with semistructured interviews among 16 IDUs who visit the needle exchange site in Quebec City. Content analysis focused on the links between injectors, proximity of the drug users' community, reported drug addiction, degree of social insertion, & social representation of sharing. Characteristics of IDU & risky zones for HIV transmission were established according to both social insertion & drug addiction. The degree of risk taking through the sharing of injection equipment varies among drug injectors. They have different levels of motivation to protect themselves against HIV transmission. Prevention programs should target IDUs according to the degree of risk of each & the IDUs' motivation to change their behaviors. 33 References. Adapted from the source document.
