Summary:The role of scientific assessments and the science-politics interplay is examined in international efforts to regulate persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Emphasis is placed on the Convention on LRT Air Pollution and UNEP. Scientific and political activities are demonstrated to be intrinsically linked in global POPs work. Scientific POPs assessments, as an expression of regulatory science, became influential by securing scientific credibility, political legitimacy, and policy salience to an array of parties. Although assessments were conducted by a small group of western nations, political legitimacy was assured by having the assessments reviewed or reassessed in representative international fora.
