ISOLATION AND INDENTIFICATION OF FUNGI FROM INFECTED SHRIMP PENAEUS MONODON AND THEIR ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY

Summary: | Infected Penaeus monodon were collected from shrimp culture pond at Ram Aqua Farm at Karanguda, Thanjavur district. From the serial diluted sample, fungal species were isolated and 0.1 ml of the sample taken from 10-4 and 10-5 tube and spread aseptically over on the potato dextrose agar medium. Totally, four different fungal strains were isolated from the shrimp intestinal sample, namely Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium solani and Penicilium notatum. Test organisms were more sensitive to mystatin antibiotic than other antibiotics. Nystatin highly inhibited the growth of Fusarium solanum (19 mm), Penicillium notatum (15 mm), Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus (14 mm). All test organisms more resistant to Ketaconazole antibiotic. The important predisposing factors leading to disease outbreaks in shrimp are adverse environment, high stocking density, nutritional deficiency and heavy algal blooms. |
