Summary:A new report from the Electric Power Research Institute assesses where diversity in instrumentation and control systems can provide significant safety benefits in nuclear power plants. The report, "Effects of Digital Instrumentation and Control Defense-in-Depth and Diversity on Risk in Nuclear Power Plants", examined plant events of varying likelihood to determine where it would be most advantageous to have multiple mitigating systems not subject to common-cause failure (CCF) in the instrumentation and control system. The report shows the impact of potential software CCF on overall plant safety, in terms of its contribution to calculated core damage frequency for a number of initiating events.
