Summary:Macae Plant, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a 2003 Power magazine Top Plant winner. It is owned by El Paso Energy. Macae was developed on a fast-track schedule as EPE moved aggressively to respond to a lack of power supply brought on by the effects of Brazil's 2000 drought that crippled the country's hydroelectric system and resulted in nationwide power rationing in 2001 and early 2002. Macae is unique: 20 gas-fired, simple-cycle combustion turbines in a single integrated facility define the project. EPE bought the plant's LM6000 turbines directly from GE, and as a result of nonresponsiveness from qualified EPC contractors and due to the tight EPC market in North America, an El Paso affiliate self-managed construction of the project to meet a tight schedule.
