Summary: | The Advanced Interactive Executive (AIX) operating system for IBM Corp.'s RT PC is based on AT&T Co.'s UNIX System V. Developers began with the kernel of UNIX and made enhancements to provide users with the widest possible choice of applications and computing environments. Deficiencies in the UNIX kernel were overcome by adding the Virtual Resource Manager (VRM), which handles storage management, virtual memory management, the input-output subsystem, and troubleshooting facilities. Enhancements made to the file system provide data management and relational database support as well as directory caching. Use of the system is streamlined through an improved single-user operation, the use of menu shells, national-language support, and diagnosis and debugging tools. The new operating system includes the following functions for wider application support: 1. broad language support, 2. Structured Query Language database management and indexed access methods, 3. industry standard graphics, 4. connectivity enhancements, 5. windowing support, and 6. distributed interconnection services. |
