Summary: | Diabetes is a disease that affects many people throughout the United States. Every year there are more people diagnosed with this disease. Some of the most affected people are the poor and uninsured. These individuals are at an increased risk of becoming diabetic for many reasons, but most relate directly or indirectly to their financial status. These individuals also tend to encounter many barriers while attempting to access appropriate healthcare. If they cannot overcome these barriers there will be an increased risk for further healthcare problems as a result of the disease. The first step to increase the effectiveness of healthcare for diabetes would be to decrease the amount of barriers individuals might encounter while attempting to seek care. One such barrier is lack of healthcare insurance. More of the working poor must be able to qualify for a program such as Medicaid, so service and supplies can be afforded. Then diabetes in these individuals could be treated before it advances to a stage where multiple body organs are affected. |
