Summary:Respiratory symptoms are rare manifestations of ulcerative colitis as well as intestinal manifestations in Wegener granulomatosis. We report the case of a 17-year old man previously diagnosed as having ulcerative colitis who presented with diffuse thoracic pain. Hypermetabolic pulmonary nodules were discovered at the positron emission tomographic scan. Necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis was demonstrated at lung biopsy. In this paper, we describe the association between pulmonary nodules and ulcerative colitis and we discuss the possibility of an overlap syndrome between ulcerative colitis and Wegener granulomatosis.
