Summary:Structural and functional characteristics of the surface of aortal endothelium in experimental hypercholesterolemia in rabbits are presented. Scanning and transmissive electron microscopy showed deendothelization of the aorta to be a secondary factor due to activation of nonspecific endocytosis of lipoproteins. Microatheromas with parietal adhesion of thrombocytes and monocytes were found to form in the very early stages of formation of experimental atherosclerotic changes in the rabbit aorta.
