Summary:The diagnostic value of abdominal ultrasonography and plain abdominal radiographs for the detection or exclusion of body smugglers was investigated prospectively. Both methods showed equally high sensitivity and specificity in the detection of swallowed drug packages. Possibilities for misinterpretation of physiological abdominal contents are illustrated. In addition to the radiological aspects, the legal implications of the subject are discussed.
