Summary:The paper discusses the multiple causes of developing urethral stricture after transurethral instrumentation. Methods are presented how these causes may be avoided with specially by on internal urethrotomy. 1660 cases of TUR show, that in 12,1% an internal urethrotomy was necessary to introduce a 24 F instrument. The frequency--distribution of the localisation of the sites of internal urethrotomy is presented. Follow-up shows that postoperative strictures have developed in 5,1% in cases without internal urethrotomy and only in 2,6% in cases where internal urethrotomy was performed before introducing the instrument for TUR.
