Summary:Background: The use of CPP-ACP combined with antibacterial propolis agents has not been widely observed and developed. Objective: To compare the effect of CPP-ACP containing propolis and CPP-ACP without propolis on the number of Streptococcus mutans in white-spot enamel surfaces of children aged 7 to 9 years old. Method: Design study was quasi-experimental using one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 32 students age 7-9 year old who had white-spot in enamel surfaces were divided into two groups. The two young dentists as examiner were calibrated by Kappa result was 0.82. Both groups carried out baseline on the variable number of S. mutans, which then one group was applied with CPP-ACP propolis paste and other group was applied with CPP-ACP without propolis every day for 4 weeks, then finally, data collection was carried out afterwards, the differences effect were statistically analyzed with T-Test and Wilcoxon. Results: There was a significant decrease (28% from applied CPP-ACP propolis, and 26% applied CPP-ACP without propolis) in the number of S. mutans from each treatment group (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference of effect CPP-ACP propolis compared to effect CPP-ACP without propolis in decreasing the number of Streptococcus mutan (p > 0.05). Conclusion: CPP-ACP containing propolis is not proven to be better than CPP-ACP without propolis in the decreasing number of Streptococcus mutans, yet it has the potential to be used as an alternative preventive material that could prevent demineralization and improve remineralization of white-spot in enamel surfaces.
