Summary:Bulk liquid membrane transport of biologically active compounds has been the subject of many researches aimed on modeling some processes of living organisms. The indole-3-acetic acid is a phytohormone with an important role in the plants growth. This paper presents an efficient indole-3-acetic acid separation procedure from aqueous solutions. A tributyl phosphate (TBP) in chloroform membrane, an acidic feed phase (pH = 2) and sodium hydroxide solution in the stripping phase are used in this process. The influence of concentration of indole-3-acetic acid in the feed phase, the liquid membrane and the stripping phase concentration during transport were studied. The optimum pertraction conditions of indole-3-acetic acid was obtained after 4 hours of transport. The concentration of the indole-3-acetic acid in feed phase was 10-4 mol/L, transport membrane concentration 10-2 mol/L and the sodium hydroxide in phase feed 10-2 mol/L. The transport efficiency, over 90%, was monitored spectrophotometrically.
