Summary:Environmental degradation and exhaustion of natural resources has become a challenge to the existence of future generations. The idea of sustainable development indicates a clear connection between the economic development, the environment as well as the social well-being. Hence the scope of the article which discusses the essence of the selected synthetic indicators describing the human impact on the environment. Presented indicators are a part of the studies related to sustainable development concept which requires universal tools and methods for measuring and assessing the level of sustainability in a global terms. In theory and practice there are a lot of frameworks and indicators for sustainable development which are useful tools for public communication concerning such areas as environment, economy and society aspects.
