Summary:The US Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials co-sponsored a scan tour to investigate what countries have done to improve safety and mobility for their aging population. The detailed findings of this project are fully documented in Improving Safety and Mobility for Older Road Users in Australia and Japan. This feature emphasizes high-level policy and program approaches. One interesting finding from discussions in both Australia and Japan is the focus on the frailty of older road users. Initiatives for older road users must be viewed in the context of the agency's overall road safety plan. The involvement of political officials is key to securing long-term funding and building societal support for road safety initiatives. The aging of society is a global issue, and many countries face the same challenges -- implementing appropriate policies and programs to improve the safety and mobility of an aging population.
