Summary:There has never been a strong tradition of collecting Old Master drawings in Sweden, and the few major collections put together there - such as those of Carl Gustaf Tessin (1695-1770), Carl Gustaf Sparre (1746-1794), Jacob De la Gardie (1768-1842), and Michael Gustaf Anckarsvard (1792-1878) - have usually ended up incorporated into the holdings of the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm Sweden. The exception is the drawing collection assembled by Major Gen. Carl Alexander Hard af Segerstad (1768-1840), which was bequeathed to Uppsala University and has remained in its library ever since. Carl Hard ended his military career as a major general and as head of the 9th infantry brigade. The art collections of Major Gen. Carl Hard af Segerstad were assembled mostly through small purchases on the Swedish market during the first four decades of the nineteenth century.
