Summary:Emerging methods for cluster assembly through fixation of CO2 in air provide an innovative approach for the development of novel single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Both 4f cluster SMMs and 3d–4f cluster SMMs may be assembled using this green pathway. Even after the introduction of chirality and/or intermolecular hydrogen bonds, such SMMs can be further made into multifunctional molecular materials at the nanoscale. In this paper, 4f cluster SMMs and 3d–4f cluster SMMs assembled by the fixation of CO2 in air are briefly reviewed, and an outlook of the promising future prospects in this field is provided.
