Summary:Presence of heavy metal concentrations and condition of eelpout around Baltic Sea were determined. The stationary eelpouts reflected the environmental state of their local environments, as they intensively concentrated the harmful substances of their food organisms. The obtained differences between the sampling stations regarding both malformed livers with tumors and parasitic infestations showed no correlation to the condition factors. It was indicated that eelpouts were not reliable bio-indicator organisms for environmental monitoring regarding heavy metals in situations of comparisons between areas where both food habits of fishes and the conditions of salinity in the environment differed remarkably. It was concluded that the concentrations of the two toxic metals, mercury and cadmium, in the edible parts of the investigated eelpouts did not exceed the stipulated safety levels for fish as human food, according to regulations by government officials in the European Union.
