Summary: | Glasses and glass-ceramic materials based on the SiO2-CaO-P2O5 system constitute an important group of materials which are widely used as bone implants. Sol-gel processing has been successfully used to produce various materials for both biomedical and nonbiomedical use. The room temperature synthesis of single or multicomponent oxide glasses, in which the morphological, physical, and chemical properties can be tailored by synthesis parameters, is a significant advantage of this method. Chitosan is a biocopolymer comprising glucosamine and N-acetylglucosamine, obtained by deacetylation of chitin. It has been reported to be safe, haemostatic and osteoconductive, and promote wound healing. New injectable, bioglass/chitosan composites were investigated. The prepared composite was characterised by FTIR, XRD and SEM. In-vivo evaluation was performed to examine the osteoconductivity. In this case, radiographic and pathological assays were accomplished. The objective was to develop a new composite, and the effect of chitosan on injectability was investigated. |
