Summary:Gibbsite hexagonal platy microcrystals were prepared in aqueous medium in the absence of sodium and alkaline cations. Iodine and aluminium in several conditions of particle size and shape, temperature, and reaction time were tried in order to obtain a reaction of the aluminium with water. Alcoa 123 uncoated aluminium powder was the best form of aluminium for the reaction and pure microcrystals of gibbsite were prepared in the temperature range of 50-60 C. Selected area electron diffraction confirmed the gibbsite structure of the microcrystals formed. 20 refs.
