Summary:East-Japan Sea, a marginal semi-enclosed sea, is divided into three major basins. The physical processes identified in this sea are also common in the East Sea. This review of the research conducted by the Kore Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) reviews major findings relevant to the East Sea, as well as current research and future plans. Oceanographic research has stressed explorations of basin-scale variability of the sub-surface circulation; using the towed and undulating SeaSoar platform to complete highly resolved and three-dimensional measurements of the meso-scale features of the sea, and developing a three-dimensional circulation model. The effects of climate change can be interpreted in some of the biological research data.
