Summary:Academic psychiatry has slightly higher rates of women in the upper ranks and leadership positions than academic medicine as a whole but women continue to be seriously underrepresented. Psychiatry departments should take specific steps to address barriers for women in psychiatry including harassment and discrimination, Imposter Syndrome, lack of mentorship and sponsorship, work-life integration issues, and overinvolvement in nonpromotion generating activities. Addressing these barriers within academic psychiatry will improve the environment for all minorities.
