Summary:Malaria control has had little success in Africa despite the achievements in malaria research. It is time to put more emphasis on sustainable control measures through local commitment to diagnose and treat malaria in order to prevent illness and death. This goal can be best achieved through basic health care centers, schools and safe water supplies to rural areas. Complementary actions through research and international support will be strongly needed.
