NOVEL ALCL3 CATALYZED SYNTHESES OF NATURALLY-OCCURRING (+/-)-8-HYDROXY-3-METHYL-3,4-DIHYDROISOCOUMARINS

Treatment of (+/-) 3-ethylphthalides 2 or 2-(prop-1-enyl)benzoic acids 5 with AlCl3 in methylene chloride gives naturally occurring (+/-) 8-hydroxy-3-methyl-3,4-dihydroisocoumarins 3 in high yields.
