Summary: | About 35% of California's waste stream is organic. Currently, about 40% of this component is still being landfilled. Composting has been prioritized by the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB), which has developed a six-target plan to deliver between 5-7 million tons more of organics annually. The targets are increasing on-site management of organics within the commercial landscaping industry; reduce the waste of commercial and institutional food; improve the quality of feedstocks; assure a balanced regulatory framework; increase compost use in agriculture; and increase compost use in landscaping and other markets. An aggressive organics management program can be initiated within the public education system, and through partnerships with other agencies/businesses. |
