Summary:The most obvious limitation of this technique is coil availability. The relatively infrequent need to image the sternum does not warrant purchase of a breast coil for this purpose. However, many facilities have purchased this coil or a similar device for breast imaging, and may find this alternative use appealing. The breast coil may also be used to adequately image other regional structures, including ribs, other chest wall elements and prevascular mediastinum. The patients' habitus and respiratory status may affect the applicability of this coil to these locations. As well, because of the limited depth possible (the signal declines approximately 7 cm from the anterior chest wall), imaging of a large lesion could be inadequate with this coil.
