Summary:Computer modelling and the simulation of manufacturing processes can significantly simplify and improve the development and manufacture of a new product. Forging industry Unior Zre5e regularly uses the FEM-based computer tool DEFORM produced by the US company Scientific Forming Technologies for the development and design of new forging dies. The software also comprises a module for the simulation of heat treatment. Unior Zre6e has a long-term collaboration with the Institute of Metals and Technology, Ljubljana, in the field of vacuum heat treatment and fracture mechanics based testing of heat treated tools and dies. Therefore, considerable experimental data already exists concerning vacuum heat treatment of hot forging dies. The usability of this tool for the simulation of hot working and heat treatment of hot forging dies is presented. A comparison between the FEM simulations and the experimental results is also given.
