Summary:This study aims to observe the effect of shape memory alloys (SMAs) activation on the critical buckling load of a structure composes of elastic column and SMAs wires under external compressive loading. A composite elastic column structure consisting of shape memory alloy fibers has been modeled. Post-buckling behavior of the structure is simulated using the finite element method. The shape memory alloy constitutive equation, which describes the shape memory effect behaviour, pseudoelasticity and constrained recovery, was applied to determine the load and stiffness of the structure. The constitutive equation mentioned is based on the Brinson constitutive equation model. The nonlinear hysteresis behaviour of shape memory alloy and the geometrically nonlinear structural deflection complicates the structural behaviour analysis. Increment of the structural critical load is observed with activation of the shape memory alloy wire.
