Summary:This study aims to examine and describe the development of mathematical problem solving abilities in students and to develop teaching materials based on a valid, practical and effective realistic mathematics education approach to improve high school students’ mathematical problem solving abilities. The method used is the experimental and control classes, with the type of qualitative research, the subjects of this research are high school students. The research instrument used was a mathematical problem solving ability test. Based on the test results using problem solving skills with the material applied is a matter of comparison in everyday life. By testing using Kolmogorof-Smirnov, the post-test significance value was obtained, namely the experimental class with experimental results of 0.088. The post-test significance value in the control class has a control result of 0.022. Based on the results of the analysis, it was concluded that: (1) the improvement of students’ mathematical problem solving abilities who received problem-based learning was better than students who received conventional learning, (2) the errors made by students when working on questions related to their ability mathematical problem solving are errors due to carelessness or lack of accuracy, errors in transforming information, error processing skills, and errors in understanding questions, (3) the problem solving ability of the experimental class is better than the problem solving ability of the control class.
