Summary: | The issue of ensuring environmental security in the Arctic region is of great importance and relevance in today’s ever changing environment. The resource potential of the region, according to the results of recent studies, is exceedingly high. According to experts, the shelf contains about 80% of the potential hydrocarbon reserves, a piece of information which led to a great deal of unwanted attention from large oil and gas companies. However, therein lies the problem in determining background characteristics and potentially vulnerable functioning systems of the environment of the Arctic region. There may be wastewater, which is a further subject to anthropogenic impact due to the presence of large-scale mining and industrial complexes on the coastal territories. |
