Summary: | A new meltshop for special and stainless steels started up in October 2003 as part of the new Buosteel Shanghai No5 Minimill, in Baoshan-Shanshai province, China. The plant is composed of a meltshop with a 60 tonnes electric arc furnace (EAF), and 60 tonnes ladle furnace (LF), twin-tank VOD station, AOD converter, alloy addition system, 3-strand continuous casting machine plus auxiliary services including a fume treatment plant and automation system. Electric Arc Furnace operation is based on two separate shells; one provided with the EBT device for slag free tapping for non stainless steels, and the other with a tapping spout for stainless steels, which is also suitable for pouring slag into the ladle, thus clearing the EAF-shell for the next heat. The Ladle Furnace is equipped with a specially designed 'Inert roof, allowing a small positive pressure to be kept inside the ladle above the steel level, but sealed to prevent any emissions of fume from the ladle to the outside environment. |
