Summary:Since the beginning of the thin slab casting and rolling adventure the great economical advantages related to this technology have been advertised world-wide. In contrast, limitations in quality and steel grades that can be cast in thin slab casters have mostly been whispered and accepted as unavoidably linked to the nature of the process. The main technological reasons that make the peritectics so sensitive to the operating conditions and difficult to cast are that during solidification there is the simultaneous presence of two solid phases, ... Ferrite and ... Austenite. Dynamic soft reduction uses an automatic Liquid Pool Control System to reduce centreline segregation, axial porosity and keeps interdendritic cracks to a minimum. As a result, Danieli have proved the ability to cast thin slabs of true Peritectic steel grade, with casting speeds close to those of conventional low and medium carbon grade steels, while fulfilling the quality required by the market.
