Summary: | Nephelium lappaceum is a fruit commonly named rambutan, with eccentric sweet flavor, is part of the Sapindaceae family and has an interesting variety of bioactive compounds. The composition of the fruit, as well as its biological properties, has been the subject of research in recent years. This review compiled published studies of cultivars of N. lappaceum species found in the Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science scientific databases until February 2019. The centesimal composition and bioactive compounds of the different parts of the fruit, including leaves of the plants, were described mainly emphasizing its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetogenic, antiobesogenic, other health improvements and toxicological characteristics. Among the results found, fruit peels were a prominent part of the plant, which is often discarded, although they concentrate a considerable portion of phenolic compounds with nutraceutical and pharmacological potential. |
