Summary:Disability insurance will provide monthly payments when an injury or illness makes it difficult or impossible to work. However, policies can differ widely. There are some critical features to look for and ask about: 1. Be sure the policy allows for payment of benefits if the dentist is unable to practice dentistry. 2. Be sure the insurance company cannot cancel the policy, raise the premium or change it in any way. 3. Make sure the policy includes a residual disability rider. 4. Choose the longest elimination period that can be, or wanted to be, afforded. 5. Opt for the cost-of-living rider. 6. Choose a policy that will pay benefits until the dentist is 65. 7. Ask for the Social Security rider. Most insurance companies will give a nonsmoker a 10% discount on the premium.
