Summary:An attempt has been made to determine whether the structure of terminal group in olefinic terpenoids is isopropylidene form or is it mixed with isopropenyl form. It has been said from the results of oxidative degradation that these two forms exist and the amount of isopropenyl form is 1550%, while nearly all has been considered to be in isopropylidene form the results of infrared spectroscopy. By noting the differences in numbers of methyl group in these two forms, the author has been estimated the optical density at 1380 cm-1 arising from the deformation-vibration of methyl group, and the molecular extinction coefficient per one methyl group has been calculated. By application of group type analysis, it was confirmed that the structure of terminal group in 8 kinds of olefinic terpenoid, such as geraniol and others, was almost exclusively of isopropylidene form.
