Summary:A psychiatric addiction admission ward was conceptually modified in 2014 into a therapeutic and an intensive care unit. The effects of this restructuring procedure were now studied in a 3-year follow up.  Data about times of closed doors, length of stay and coercive measures were evaluated over 3 measurement phases (Prä, Post, Follow-Up), each covering a 5-months period.  After restructuring, the door was closed significantly less often. In the follow-up period the results improved once more.  The conceptual restructuring on a therapeutic, organizational and constructional level resulted in a sustained change in terms of custodial measures and length of stay.
