Summary:In 2021, diabetes was the eighth leading cause of death in the United States (1). Over 37 million Americans have diabetes (2). While it most often develops in people older than age 45 (3), its frequency is increasing in young adults (4). Among people with diabetes, increasing age is a risk factor for hospitalization (5). Emergency department (ED) visits by people with diabetes have been used to monitor access to care and healthcare use (6). This report describes ED visits made by adults with diabetes, and presents selected characteristics by age.
