Summary: | Health has become a national obsession. The tactics to achieve the goals are myriad and will be enhanced if traditional health providers and payers can partner with bright minds in other disciplines to seek new solutions and tools to achieve transformation. The key to transformation in healthcare delivery will depend on abandoning traditional assumptions that have been intrinsic to the development of the current “non‐system” of care. A fully interoperable electronic health record (EHR) can provide full information at the point of care, yet penetration of interoperable systems within the provider community is not high. Decision support is embedded in the best EHR systems to facilitate the best course of action based on medical evidence. Health plan claims costs have been extremely useful in beginning to look at unwarranted variation in practice as defined by process metrics, but they are generally not useful in measuring outcomes of care. |
