Summary:Boron carbide powders were synthesised by Rapid Carbothermal Reduction (RCR). Analyses were conducted on synthesised powders as well as selected commercial boron carbide powders. Submicron powders with a narrow particle size distribution were synthesised, and the results were compared with commercial powders. Powders were sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and high theoretical densities were achieved. Limited grain growth was seen while achieving full densities. Hardness results showed an improvement compared to commercial samples and the effects of processing variables on the final products were evaluated.
