TOWARDS THE CONVERSION OF A SOLID OXIDE CELL INTO A HIGH TEMPERATURE BATTERY

Mixtures of Fe2O3 with CaO or CaCO3 were evaluated for use as the metal-oxide component in rechargeable oxide batteries based on solid oxide fuel cells operating at about 800 C. Specimens were prepared by tape casting and sintered in air at temperatures in the range 900-1100 C. The specimens were re...

Summary:Mixtures of Fe2O3 with CaO or CaCO3 were evaluated for use as the metal-oxide component in rechargeable oxide batteries based on solid oxide fuel cells operating at about 800 C. Specimens were prepared by tape casting and sintered in air at temperatures in the range 900-1100 C. The specimens were repeatedly reduced and oxidised by heating at 800 C in atmospheres of Ar, 2%H2 and Ar, 2%H2, 7%H2O, respectively. TGA and microstructural studies showed that the compositions containing 28-66 mol% CaO or CaCO3 to be suitable candidate materials for rechargeable oxide battery applications.
