Summary:Properties of optical fibers whose attenuation ranges from about 10 to 100 dB/km are reviewed. The effect of varying the numerical aperture of a given fiber on the coupling losses experienced at the launching end is examined for the case of three fibers having equivalent core areas but different numerical apertures. Advantages of high-numerical-aperture fibers composed of normal lead silicate glasses are discussed along with the production process for such fibers, techniques of bundle formation, and systems designed specifically for use with fiber bundles.
