| Summary: | In the research studies related to neologism production in Spanish by university professors, a series of words but not terms have been detected, which according to the respective characterization should not be considered in the category of neologisms. Words are the lexical units belonging to the general language, whereas term or terminological unit denotes a specialized concept in any disciplines of knowledge. The question that serves as a title of this article is the main problem we face in this opportunity: to determine whether the lexical units used by professors in the written academic discourse could be considered as neologisms, following the certain basic conditions, such as the necessity criterion & the morphophonemic constraints of Spanish, or if they are simply linguistic failures, including the illegal copies & modifications of word formation rules in Spanish which threaten our language.
