Summary:In this paper we analyze the evolution of Mexican urban employment in the first years of the XXI century. It takes into account different survival strategies, such as developing informal activities with high vulnerability in particular among women. We found differences between formal and informal sectors, for men based on their age structure. However for women other social and demographic features are relevant, such as being head of household, their fertility level and a schooling level above high school. We face an occupational structure that does not include the most experienced and productive occupations, altogether with an expansion of the informality, regardless the huge efforts of women and men to achieve higher education.
