Summary:The paper reports on aspects of the test method within the experimental determination of mechanical properties of ductile cast iron (DCI) materials at high strain rate loading conditions with respect to the fracture mechanical safety assessment. Especially, key points of force and strain measurement are examined. First results of a programme for systematic investigation of the strength and deformation behaviour of DCI at high strain rate loading conditions are presented. The data are discussed in dependence on the parameters test temperature, strain rate and microstructure. Furthermore, the influence of these parameters on the flow curves is pointed out. Finally, the material specific modelling of the temperature and strain rate dependence of the proof stress by means of the model of thermal activated flow is discussed.
