Summary:Felix Vallotton (1865 1925) was one of the most innovative painters and engravers of his generation. Born in Lausanne but living in Paris, his artistic background was that of the symbolists and the Nabis, visionary and ironic, but also restrained and meticulous. Considered a 'confounding presence' in the art of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, he eluded all classification, to the extent that critics were hard put to appreciate his complexity and the way in which painting and printmaking were closely interwoven and complementary in his artistic expression. An excellent printmaker, his woodcuts reveal a clarity of design that is unmistakable, giving rise to a marked contrast of forms and spatial planes that long polarized art historians at the expense of his equally important achievements in the spheres of lithography, etching, illustration and literature. All aspects of Valloton's oeuvre have at last been taken into proper consideration, accompanied by his best paintings and a meaningful selection of his prints.
