Summary:Kerr et al published a retrospective cohort study In which they conclude that nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) may be harmful to intensive care unit (ICU) patients and should not be used outside of rigorously conducted clinical trials designed to assess its safety and efficacy. This conclusion cannot be made from the data they presented and could discourage clinicians from prescribing NRT, which has a long history of safe use in hospitalised smokers to decrease acute nicotine withdrawal symptoms and promote smoking abstinence after discharge.
