Summary:Developing funding sources for applied research programs is a major concern for many research administrators. The National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) National Research Center has structured a pragmatic approach to identifying the most likely funding sources in the light-construction industry. Applied research expands on the results of basic research for their market applicability. It is important for a research organization involved in technology development to recognize the role for which it is best suited. Applied research should understand and address the 5 characteristics of innovation that are strongly associated with project adoption: 1. perceived economic advantage, 2. compatibility, 3. complexity, 4. trialability, and 5. observability.
